a “pathway to citizenship” for people here illegally. In Texas, of all places, right as Republicans are getting ready for President Trump’s midterm convention. That timing is not an accident. Democrats see the border chaos, they see the polling, and they want to change the subject from enforcement to paperwork.

Here’s the problem: you don’t reward the behavior you’re still failing to stop. Washington cannot even tell us who crossed last month, where they went, or how many were turned loose with a court date years away. So when a candidate jumps straight to citizenship, it sounds less like compassion and more like amnesty by another name. Texans have lived the consequences, from fentanyl to overwhelmed schools and hospitals. “Pathway” is a nice word. The bill comes due anyway.

If Talarico wants to be taken seriously, start with the basics. Mandatory E-Verify, real consequences for employers who cheat, finishing the wall and the technology, ending catch-and-release, and forcing cooperation from sanctuary cities that treat federal law like a suggestion. Enforce first, then talk. Anything else is a promise that the next wave will be bigger, because people listen to incentives more than speeches.

This is why Trump’s message still lands here. He’s not arguing about feelings. He’s talking about control. Democrats keep offering citizenship as the first step, like America is just a line you eventually get to skip if you wait long enough. Texas isn’t buying that anymore, and neither is most of the country.
