Talarico holds 5-point lead over Paxton in Texas Senate race,

The first reaction is to wave it off as a blue mirage. Texas is Texas, and Ken Paxton has won three statewide races. But this isn't a national poll or a left-wing outlet. Texas Public Opinion Research is a Texas firm, and 1,007 likely voters is a real sample. When a Democrat is at 49 percent against a sitting Republican attorney general, something is off in the GOP's message. The margin of error is tight, but a five-point lead is not nothing.

Paxton has spent his tenure in Austin fighting the Biden administration and the courts. That plays well in a Republican primary. A general election is a different animal. James Talarico is running as a "moderate" Texan, talking about public schools and property tax relief. He is not running as AOC. He is showing up in places Republicans usually ignore, and he is not letting Paxton define the race. If Paxton's team treats this like a layup, they are reading the wrong tea leaves. This is a wake-up call, not a blip.

We are not going to pretend the poll is gospel. But we are also not going to pretend Texas is safe. The border crisis, the fentanyl epidemic, and parental rights are winning issues. They only win if someone makes the case. A complacent campaign loses the suburbs every time. Paxton needs to remind Texans why he has been a thorn in Washington's side, and he needs to do it now, not after Labor Day. The talent is there. The urgency, apparently, is not.
