But if you’re a New York City mayor, and you’re sharing photos of The Diplomats in multiple July 4 posts, you don’t get to act surprised when people connect the dots to the group’s long-running 9/11 baggage. New York doesn’t do “just vibes” about 9/11. Not from anyone, and especially not from the guy running City Hall.

The obvious dodge here is, “It’s just rap culture,” or “You’re reading too much into it.” Fine. Then explain why it shows up again and again in patriotic holiday posts. This city buried its dead, watched smoke roll over neighborhoods, and then spent years listening to smug, sideways takes from people who wanted the attention without the responsibility. If you want to be mayor, you don’t get to be cute with symbols. You pick carefully, and you own it when you don’t.

We don’t need cartoonish names to say something real: a mayor who can’t show basic judgment about 9/11-related references is a problem. Full stop. Mamdani can clear this up in one clean statement. Was he unaware of the controversy, or did he think it didn’t matter, or was he leaning into it? Pick one and answer like an adult. New Yorkers are not asking for a poetry reading. They’re asking for a mayor who understands that some topics are not content. They’re history, and they’re scars.
