Trump administration blocks California ban on camping propane canisters

A ban on the little propane canisters campers use for their stoves and lanterns. That's what Sacramento decided needed killing off by 2028. Not a safety recall, not a response to some wave of accidents. Just a preemptive strike on a product that federal regulators already deemed fine to sell nationwide.

The Department of Transportation's answer was simple: California doesn't get to run its own parallel universe of transportation and hazmat rules just because it feels like it. These canisters are federally regulated. That's not a technicality, that's the whole point of having a national standard instead of fifty states each inventing their own rulebook for what can go in a backpack. If California wants its residents to stop buying propane canisters, it can try persuasion. What it can't do is legislate around federal authority and call it environmental policy.

This is the same pattern we've watched for years now. California passes something sweeping, brands it as protecting the planet or the public, and dares Washington to do something about it. Usually nobody does, and the rule just becomes reality everywhere because manufacturers don't want to make two versions of a product. That's the real game: not banning propane in California, but functionally banning it everywhere by making California the default national regulator.

Good on the administration for actually calling that bluff this time. Camping stoves and portable heaters are not the hill anyone should die on, which is exactly why they make an easy test case. If the precedent holds, it holds for bigger fights too.
