Trump Cabinet Members Take 500 Domestic Trips Before Midterms

Five hundred domestic trips between Memorial Day and Labor Day sounds like a lot, because it is. But the more interesting question is what those trips were, exactly. Were Cabinet secretaries out cutting ribbons, touring plants, meeting sheriffs, talking to farmers, and pushing real programs? Or were they just racking up frequent flyer miles for photo ops in “key districts”? Either way, Washington finally remembered the country exists outside Washington.

The press always treats “travel to swing states” as automatically suspicious, like governing is only legitimate if it happens within a ten-mile radius of the Beltway. If a Cabinet member goes to Ohio to talk infrastructure, jobs, energy, or border security, that’s not some dark art. That’s the job. People in these places are the ones living with the costs of bad policy, and they deserve to see the people making decisions show up and take questions. We’d rather have officials in factories and ports than on cable panels.

Now, the part that needs daylight is the bill. Taxpayer-funded travel should come with clear schedules, clear purposes, and clear results. Publish the itineraries. List the meetings. Say what got done. If there were campaign-style events, own that and separate it from official business. Don’t hand Democrats an easy talking point by being sloppy.

Still, we’re not going to pretend this is some scandal just because it happened before the midterms. Politics is persuasion, and governing is explaining. If the Trump team is sending Cabinet members out to sell border enforcement, deregulation, and a pro-worker economy to the communities that will feel it most, good. Bring Washington to the voters, not the other way around..
