The awkward moment happened in a room where the president was conducting diplomacy, not a press availability. Kaitlan Collins got an answer to her presence quickly: “You should not be here.” That wasn’t a dodge. It was a statement of fact. The United Nations is not a CNN studio, and the access she expects at the White House is not something she is owed at a multilateral meeting.

The context matters. Collins works for an outlet that is actively suing the White House over its decision to bar three news organizations. You don’t get to sue the host and then act surprised when you’re not on the guest list. If CNN wants to litigate access, fine. Do it in court. But the president is not required to hand a microphone to someone whose company is trying to tie him up in legal knots.

The First Amendment protects the press from government censorship. It does not compel the president to give every reporter a front-row seat to every event. This president talks to reporters constantly and takes questions he doesn’t have to take. The difference is he decides who is in the room. That is how it works for any leader, whether the media likes it or not.

The uncomfortable truth for Collins is that she is not the story. The story is whether journalists want access or a fight. They can’t have both and then complain about the consequences. Trump treated her the way anyone would treat a guest who sued them and then showed up uninvited. That is not a scandal. It is common sense.
