Ten million dollars is not a rounding error, and the fact that Trump's own super PAC felt the need to write that check tells you something the Paxton campaign has probably been trying not to say out loud: this race got closer than anyone in Austin wanted to admit. Texas hasn't elected a Democrat statewide since the 1990s, and here comes MAGA Inc. behaving like the seat is actually in play against James Talarico. That's not panic, exactly, but it's not confidence either.

Paxton has spent years being his own worst messenger. The securities fraud indictment, the impeachment trial, the divorce filing with allegations attached to it, the general sense that every news cycle brings a fresh headline he'd rather not answer for. None of that disqualifies him in a deep-red state where partisanship usually does the heavy lifting, but it does mean voters who'd otherwise ignore a generic Democrat are getting a second look at Talarico. Money can paper over a lot of that with TV ads, but it can't fully erase what voters already know about a candidate.

The bigger point here is about what Trump's involvement signals for the party's bench. When the national operation has to step in to save a statewide race in Texas, of all places, it's a warning shot for every other Republican incumbent who assumes the letter next to their name does the work. Talarico is a serious candidate running a disciplined campaign, and Democrats clearly think Texas is worth the investment even if they come up short. Republicans should take the hint: strong states don't stay strong on autopilot, and $10 million spent defending turf that should never have needed defending is $10 million not spent expanding the map elsewhere.
