Trump says Venezuelan oil will replenish Strategic Petroleum Reserves

Fill the reserves with Venezuelan oil. Say it out loud and it sounds almost too simple, which is probably why nobody in Washington thought to just do it for the last four years. Biden drained the SPR to about the lowest levels since the Ford administration trying to paper over gas prices heading into an election, and then left it there. Now there's a deal on the table that refills the tank using oil from a country we've spent two decades sanctioning into the ground. That's not nothing.

Skeptics will ask the obvious question: why are we doing business with Maduro's government at all. Fair question, and one this column has asked plenty of times. But there's a difference between rewarding a regime and using leverage to get something concrete out of it. If the terms actually get us discounted crude flowing into a reserve that's supposed to protect this country in a real emergency, that's a transaction, not a friendship. Trump has never been shy about doing deals with unsavory characters when he thinks the math works for America. Sometimes that's cynicism. Sometimes it's just how you actually get something done instead of issuing statements about it.

What we'll be watching is whether this is a real, verifiable pipeline of barrels or another headline that outruns the paperwork. Trump makes big announcements on Sundays; the details tend to show up later, if at all. The reserve doesn't refill itself on vibes. If the oil shows up and the price is right, this is a genuine win nobody else managed to pull off. If it's mostly talk, it'll just be one more thing said out loud that never quite becomes policy.
