How We See It
The Trades Union Congress has looked at the world and decided the problem isn’t tyrants, it’s budgets. Their proposal to redirect defence funds into worker welfare is the kind of idea that sounds generous until you think it through for half a minute. The same folks who demand the state solve every domestic ill are somehow confident that we can just shrug at the international ones. That is a fantasy, not a policy. Every nation that neglected its military has eventually paid a far higher price in blood and treasure.
We’re not saying workers don’t matter. But the first job of any government is to keep its people alive and free. The TUC’s approach treats security as an optional line item, as if the threats on the horizon will politely wait for a round of collective bargaining. The left likes to call that a “peace dividend.” History calls it wishful thinking.
There is something especially galling about this coming from Britain, a country that knows what happens when you underprepare for the worst. Those union leaders should talk to the Ukrainians about whether defence spending is wasteful. Then they should thank a soldier next time they see one. The worker investment that really matters is paying for the people who keep the rest of us in a position to argue about it.
