Universities Honor 9/11 Victims with Memorial Stair Climbs

There’s something bracing about watching a bunch of college kids choose to spend part of their day trudging up 110 stories, step after step, because strangers ran into a burning building 23 years ago and didn’t come out. No fireworks. No hashtags. Just lungs burning, legs shaking, and a number that doesn’t let you look away: 343.

These memorial stair climbs do something our culture badly needs. They put the focus where it belongs, on the firefighters and first responders who showed up when everything was chaos. You can’t “move on” while you’re still climbing. It’s a simple act, but it forces a kind of respect that speeches never quite pull off.

Universities don’t always cover themselves in glory when it comes to patriotism. Too many administrations treat the country like an embarrassing relative and treat law enforcement like a punchline. So when teams and campuses organize a real, physical tribute like this, we’ll say it: good. Honor is heavier than a moment of silence. And if a few students finish that climb with a new appreciation for the people who keep their towns safe, all the better.

The country still argues about almost everything. But this shouldn’t be one of those things. Remembering 9/11 isn’t about reliving trauma or chasing political points. It’s about naming the debt. 343 isn’t a symbol. It’s a roll call..
