Virginia City to Spend Tax Dollars on Illegal Immigrants

Arlington County wants to cut checks to people who are in the country illegally, and they want to do it with everybody’s money. Not donations. Not private charity. Tax dollars. In a place where plenty of legal residents are struggling with rent, childcare, and the everyday costs that don’t make headlines, officials somehow decided the most urgent priority is a new benefit stream for people who broke the rules to get here.

We’re told, as always, that this is about compassion and “helping families.” Fine. But compassion isn’t a blank check, and government isn’t a GoFundMe. When a local government uses public funds to subsidize illegal immigration, it’s not neutral. It’s an incentive. It signals to would-be migrants, and to the networks that move them, that some jurisdictions will cushion the landing if you make it across. That is the real-world effect, no matter how carefully the press release is written.

There’s also a basic question of fairness that regular voters understand instinctively. If you’re a legal immigrant who did the paperwork, waited years, paid fees, and followed the process, what exactly are you supposed to think when a wealthy county hands out payments to people who skipped the line? If you’re a working Arlington resident paying high property taxes, why is your local government so eager to be generous with your wallet and so stingy about the message it sends to everyone else.

Arlington can call it whatever it wants. But to most Americans, this looks like a reward. If local leaders want to make a moral case for private aid, they can do that. If they want to lobby Washington to change the law, they can do that too. What they shouldn’t do is turn a county budget into an entitlement for illegal immigration and then act surprised when residents ask who, exactly, their government is supposed to be serving.
