Waveland voters to choose between two familiar faces for mayor

Waveland's Republican primary for mayor is not a battle over national talking points. It's a choice between two men who have already been in the room where decisions get made. Jay Trapani has the title. Bobby Richardson has a ward-level perspective and the complaints that come with it. That's what makes October interesting. A contested primary is a healthy thing. It forces the incumbent to defend actual results, not just ribbon cuttings.

Neither candidate is a newcomer, so the usual "outsider vs insider" frame doesn't quite fit. Voters know both. They've seen them at council meetings, at church fundraisers, at the gas station. That means this race will be decided on wonky things like drainage, permitting, and how fast the city responds when a streetlight goes out. That's a good problem for Waveland. It means the pitch is about competence, not ideology.

We say this as a publication that cares about conservative wins. The primary system is how a party keeps itself honest. If Trapani has done right by the town, he should be able to say so plainly. If Richardson thinks he can do better, he has to name the specific failures. No national boogeyman. No vague promises. Just two familiar faces asking for four more years or a fresh start. We should all pay attention. Because this is where the America First agenda actually meets the pavement.
