White House taps former Arlington prosecutor to be U.S. attorney in Virginia

Theo Stamos is not exactly a MAGA firebrand. She's a career prosecutor who spent years as a Democratic elected official in Arlington, and her nomination to be U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia is going to raise eyebrows in some corners of the coalition that expected this administration to hand every plum job to movement loyalists. Good. That's actually the point worth making here.

The Eastern District of Virginia is not some backwater slot. It's one of the busiest, most consequential U.S. attorney's offices in the country, handling national security cases, public corruption, and everything that flows through the federal courthouses in Alexandria and Richmond. That office needs someone who has actually prosecuted cases, managed a docket, and made hard charging decisions under pressure. Stamos has done all of that. She was not some soft-on-crime activist prosecutor either; she got primaried out of Arlington in 2019 specifically because progressives thought she was too tough, too old-school, too committed to actually enforcing the law rather than treating every case as a referendum on the system itself.

That's the kind of prosecutor this administration should be looking for, regardless of her voter registration. If the goal is a Justice Department that functions competently and prosecutes real crimes rather than one obsessed with ideological purity tests, then picking someone with a track record over someone with a loyalty pledge is the right call. It also undercuts the lazy narrative that every Trump appointment is a partisan hack job. Sometimes competence outranks the résumé line about party affiliation.

We'd rather see ten picks like this than one more culture-war casting choice that flames out in six months because the person had never actually run a courtroom. Results matter more than optics, even when the optics are a little unexpected.
