Why This Matters

Paul Cahill wants to know where the real Democrats are. Fair enough, but we’d like to flip that question right back at him. Where have the real Republicans been?

Morristown reader: It’s Democrats who will save America Adobe Stock OPINION — I have a question for Paul Cahill, who wondered in a recent letter to the editor where America’s real Democrats are.

I admired the courage of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain. I appreciated the honesty of Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney. So, I’ll ask: Will the real Republicans please step forward? Republicans should be appalled at the idea of Trump starting a government-run television network, banning what he believes is unfavorable journalism, acquiring stakes in private companies, prosecuting political enemies and claiming only elections Republicans lose are unfair.

How We See It

New Republican Times Editorial Board

Paul Cahill wants to know where the real Democrats are. Fair enough, but we’d like to flip that question right back at him. Where have the real Republicans been? Not in the country club conference rooms, that’s for sure, and not in the cable news green rooms where ex-staffers get paid to call President Trump a threat to democracy. The real Republicans were in the factories and the farming towns, and they were tired of being told their country wasn’t worth fighting for.

That's why this "which party is authentic" debate rings hollow on the left. Democrats have spent years chasing every primary voter with a new identity category, while the GOP found its spine again under Trump. The old GOP is dead, and good riddance. The party that launched forever wars, ballooned the debt under Bush, and shrugged at open borders didn’t deserve to survive. The version that does deserve to survive is the one that actually showed up for working Americans on trade, immigration, and foreign entanglements.

So if Cahill wants real Republicans to step forward, they already have. They are the voters who stood in line for hours in Pennsylvania and Georgia, the precinct chairs who fought through two impeachments and a stolen-narrative media pile-on, and the elected officials who refused to fold when the consultants told them to act "normal." The real Republicans are the ones who stayed, not the ones who left and wrote memoirs. If that bothers someone, they were probably never looking for the truth. They were just looking for cover.
