Abdul El-Sayed Hailed as 'Longtime Friend' of Democratic Socialists and Headlined Socialist Fundraiser With 'Squad' Member Before Claiming He Is 'Not Somebody Who Is a Socialist'

"Not technically or practically" a socialist is one of those lawyer answers that tells you everything by trying to tell you nothing. Nobody talks like that unless they've already decided the label is a liability and the relationship isn't. El-Sayed didn't just show up to a DSA event once and get photographed near a banner. He headlined a fundraiser for the Detroit chapter, which called him a "longtime friend," which is not the kind of thing socialist organizations say about people who occasionally wander into their orbit for a handshake and a selfie.

This is the same playbook we've watched for years now. Run hard left through the primary, court every activist group that can turn out volunteers and small donors, then pivot the second the general electorate comes into view and start using words like "technically" to create daylight that never actually existed. Michigan voters aren't stupid. They can look at a timeline and see a guy who spent years building credibility inside the DSA world, sharing stages with Squad-aligned members, and ask why the friendship only became complicated once a Senate seat was on the line.

If El-Sayed genuinely isn't a socialist, fine, that's a legitimate position to hold. But then explain the fundraiser. Explain the "longtime friend" line from people who presumably know him better than most voters do. You don't get to spend a decade cultivating a movement's trust and then, in an election year, ask everyone to pretend it was all just casual overlap. Either the DSA misunderstood who he was for years, or he's misunderstanding what he wants voters to believe now.
