AOC declines to endorse Hong, says she’s focused on ‘winning back’ Congress

Notice what AOC didn't say. She didn't say Hong's politics are wrong for Wisconsin, or that a democratic socialist might struggle in a state Democrats need to actually win. She said she's busy with Congress. That's not a policy disagreement, that's a dodge, and everyone watching knows it.

This is the same move Democratic leadership has been making for years now: let the loudest progressive voices raise money and draw cameras, then quietly step back when their actual candidates are on the ballot somewhere that matters. AOC built her entire brand on primarying moderates and daring the party establishment to stop her. Now she's the establishment, at least in the sense that winning the House majority requires votes from places like Wisconsin that aren't Queens or the Bronx, and suddenly the democratic socialist label is radioactive again.

Hong is not some fringe figure to national Democrats, she's a sitting state legislator running a real campaign, and this snub will get noticed in Madison whether or not it gets noticed on cable news. Voters can smell when a politician is triangulating instead of leading.

What this really tells you is that even the party's most visible left flank understands something Republicans have been saying for a while: run as a democratic socialist in a swing state and you hand the general election away. AOC just won't say it out loud.
