They plaster Amish Shah with Bernie Sanders’s name like a scarlet letter, banking on the idea that Maricopa County voters aren’t in the mood for a Brooklyn-style socialist detour. It’s a cheap shot, sure. But politics in a competitive district is a contact sport, and Feely is clearly done playing defense.

The move is smart for a very simple reason: it drags Shah back to the national stage, where his party is bleeding support. This isn't a race about zoning laws or water rights anymore. Feely is forcing a referendum on the national Democratic brand by tying his opponent to a self-proclaimed socialist who is less popular here than he is in Burlington.
