A poll showing a Republican ahead of Xavier Becerra in a major California county should stop people in their tracks, and not just because of the party label. But the fact that this race is being described as a toss-up at all tells you something about the mood among voters who used to be reliable Democratic votes without a second thought. Affordability, crime, homelessness policy that hasn't worked no matter who's in charge in Sacramento. Those frustrations don't stop at party lines, and this poll is a small but real data point that some voters are finally willing to say so out loud.

If Hilton actually closes this out, national Democrats should be far more worried about what it says about their brand in blue territory than they'll probably let on.
