Cruz: No Clear GOP Successor for 2028, Trump’s Shadow Looms Large

Ted Cruz didn’t say anything shocking on “Pod Force One,” but he did say something a lot of Republicans whisper and then rush past. “There is no Donald Trump on the horizon.” That’s true, and it’s also the point. Trump didn’t walk into politics as the next in line. He bulldozed the line.

The funny thing is how Washington types treat this like a staffing problem. As if the party just needs to audition a few governors, rotate them through cable news, and pick a “successor” by 2028. Trump isn’t a role you can cast. He’s a once-in-a-generation mix of timing, talent, and toughness, and he rewired what Republican voters expect: results, not polite losing.

So yes, his shadow “looms large.” Good. The question isn’t who can do a Trump impression with better lighting. It’s who can take the actual agenda that won: the border secured, the wars not multiplied, the economy geared toward workers, and the bureaucracy put on notice. The base isn’t shopping for a new mascot. It’s shopping for someone who will fight the same fights and finish them.

Cruz is also hinting at a reality the donor class hates: the next few years aren’t about coronations. They’re about whether Republicans can build a bench that respects why Trump happened in the first place. If they don’t, 2028 will be a talent show. If they do, it’ll be a continuation.
