Dem handlers lash out when cameraman confronts their boss about debate: ‘No pictures’

The clip is almost too on-the-nose: a cameraman asks Amy Acton why she won’t debate Vivek Ramaswamy, and instead of an answer, her handlers move in like a bouncer squad. “No pictures.” Not “we’ll get back to you.” Not “here’s our schedule.” Just shut it down. If your first instinct is to swat away a camera, you’re not ready for a statewide race.

Debates are not some quaint tradition we do for the press gallery. They’re how voters see whether a candidate can handle pressure, explain tradeoffs, and think on their feet. If Acton has a case for skipping a debate, she should say it out loud and take the heat for it. The fact that the campaign’s response was to scold the guy holding the lens tells you they’re more worried about controlling the scene than making their argument. A campaign that can’t handle a question won’t handle Columbus.

And yes, we’ve all seen campaigns try to run out the clock, duck tough forums, and hide behind “security” or “schedule conflicts.” But when the question is as basic as “why won’t you debate,” the answer isn’t to treat the public like an inconvenience. Ramaswamy is out there asking for the comparison. Let it happen. If Acton thinks she’s the stronger candidate, the debate stage is where she proves it.

Ohioans have watched too many officials talk down to them and then demand trust anyway. The “no pictures” moment lands because it feels familiar: not transparency, not accountability, just management. If Acton won’t debate, she should at least be honest about why. Otherwise, voters are going to assume the simplest explanation: she doesn’t want to be tested.
