Democrats’ generational battle erupts as 80-year-old senator faces younger challenger

Ed Markey is 80 years old and he's already survived one primary challenge from a younger, telegenic opponent who tried to make the race about generational change. Now here comes Seth Moulton doing the same dance, and the Democratic Party is once again pretending this is a fresh conversation instead of a rerun with different lighting.

Here's what's funny about it. Democrats spent years insisting age was ageist to even mention, right up until Joe Biden's debate performance made the quiet part loud. Now suddenly every safe blue seat has somebody's forty-something challenger talking about "new energy" and "the next generation of leadership," as if that fixes anything. It doesn't fix the agenda. Moulton isn't running against Markey's ideas so much as his birth certificate, and that's a tell. When you can't win the argument on substance, you run on the calendar.

Markey, for what it's worth, has been a reliably progressive vote for decades, so this isn't some grand ideological clash dressed up as one. It's a proxy fight over who gets to hold safe Democratic seats as the party ages out its old guard without a real bench to replace them. Massachusetts voters will sort it out, but the national story here isn't really about Markey or Moulton. It's about a party that spent the Biden years denying the obvious and is now litigating age limits one Senate seat at a time instead of just saying it out loud.
