'Extremist' and 'barbaric': Massachusetts Democrats break ranks over new abortion law

Nine Democrats in the Massachusetts House looked at their own party's abortion bill and said no. That's the story here, not some outside group or a Republican press release. When lawmakers who campaigned as pro-choice start using words like "extremist" and "barbaric" about legislation from their own leadership, that tells you something about where the line actually is for most people, even most Democrats.

Removing the 24-week gestational limit isn't a technical adjustment. That threshold existed for a reason, tied to viability, tied to a rough consensus that even people who support abortion rights held for decades. Erasing it entirely, with no clear substitute standard, isn't "protecting reproductive freedom." It's abandoning the one guardrail that made the position defensible to anyone outside the activist wing of the party.

What's notable is that it took nine defections to make this newsworthy at all. In a lot of statehouses this bill sails through on a voice vote and nobody blinks. The fact that Massachusetts Democrats, of all people, felt compelled to publicly break ranks suggests the leadership pushing this thing badly misjudged how far their own coalition was willing to go.

We'd also just note the language. These aren't Republican talking points. "Barbaric" came from Democrats. When your own side reaches for that word, maybe the answer isn't to steamroll ahead and call the dissenters extreme instead.
