Federal judge blocks New York law banning ICE agents from wearing masks

a state cannot dictate the uniform of a federal agent doing federal work. The law was dressed up as a transparency measure, but strip away the language and it was an attempt by Albany to make ICE operations harder to conduct and easier to sabotage. Masks protect agents and their families from being doxxed by people who've made a hobby out of publishing officers' home addresses. That's not a hypothetical. It's happened.

New York lawmakers knew exactly what they were doing. You don't pass a bill targeting one specific federal agency's operational security by accident. If this were really about accountability, it would have applied evenly to every law enforcement officer working undercover in the state, not singled out the one agency the state's political class has spent years demonizing.

Federal supremacy exists for exactly this kind of fight. States don't get to override how federal agents conduct federal enforcement just because the governing party finds the mission distasteful. If New York wants ICE gone, that's a fight to have in Congress, not through a state statute engineered to expose agents to harassment and worse.

This ruling is temporary, and the case will keep grinding through the courts. But the early signal is right. You don't get to unmask federal officers to score points with a base that wants immigration enforcement to simply stop existing.
