Francesca Hong wants to be the DSA’s first governor. Tuesday may bring her closer to the goal

A state rep from Madison who calls herself a democratic socialist is the frontrunner to lead the Wisconsin Democratic Party into a governor's race. Not the insurgent. Not the protest candidate. The frontrunner. If that doesn't tell you where the party's center of gravity has drifted, nothing will.

Wisconsin isn't Brooklyn or Berkeley. It's a state that decides presidential elections by a few thousand votes and has sent plenty of pragmatic, blue-collar Democrats to Madison and Washington over the years. Francesca Hong winning a primary there isn't some fluke confined to a safe urban district. It's a signal that DSA-style politics has found real footing in a genuine battleground, not just in the deep-blue enclaves where it usually thrives.

Democratic strategists will spend the next few months insisting this is a local story, that Hong's coalition is unique to Dane County and won't translate statewide. Maybe. But the same thing was said about plenty of candidates who later became the face of their party whether the party wanted it or not. Wisconsin voters who like their taxes low and their politics practical are about to get a very clear look at what "progressive" actually means on a ballot, not in a tweet.

If Hong wins Tuesday, the general election becomes a referendum on socialism in a state Republicans absolutely need to win. That's not a bad hand to be dealt.
