Francesca Hong’s collapse offers hope for establishment Dems — but the radical left is still working hard to infiltrate

Francesca Hong's flameout in the Wisconsin primary is the kind of result that makes Democratic strategists sleep a little easier, and honestly, we understand the relief. The polls had this thing looking like a coin flip, maybe even tilting toward the DSA-backed candidate, and instead she got buried. That's not a rounding error. That's voters in a Democratic primary looking at a self-described democratic socialist and deciding, not this time.

But let's not pretend one bad night for the "Squad" wing means the project is dead. These groups didn't spend a decade building out organizing infrastructure, small-dollar donor networks, and a bench of primary challengers just to fold up shop after Wisconsin. Hong lost, but the machinery that put her within striking distance of a governor's race in the first place is still humming along in city councils, school boards, and state legislatures all over the country. That's where this stuff actually takes root, quietly, while everyone's watching the marquee races.

The establishment Democrats celebrating right now ought to ask themselves why this was ever close. A party that can't articulate what it stands for besides "not the other guy" is going to keep getting these scares, election after election, because the vacuum doesn't stay empty. Somebody fills it, and right now the people most eager to fill it are the ones running on rent control, abolishing ICE, and taxing their way to utopia.

We'd love to say this was the moment the far left's momentum broke. More likely it's a speed bump. The infiltration strategy was never about winning every race immediately. It's about patience, and patience doesn't lose just because Tuesday went badly.
