GOP Governor Hopeful Rescued After Plane Ditches in Lake

Tom Tiffany and the pilot just swam. No dramatic rescue video, no political theater, just two guys getting out of a sinking Bonanza after an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau on a Saturday night. It’s frightening, and it’s also weirdly clarifying. When the plane goes down, the talking points don’t matter.

Tiffany is running for governor, and within hours this could have turned into a glossy “miracle” ad. Instead, the basic fact is enough. Aviation is unforgiving, and small planes do not care about your résumé. If anything, the story is a reminder of how much faith we place in competence we rarely see up close, like a pilot making the call to ditch on water and getting both people out alive. Good judgment beats bravado every time.

We’re glad he’s safe. And we’re glad, too, that this isn’t being treated as an excuse to sneer at “rural” life or the kind of travel that’s normal in big, spread-out states. People fly between Wisconsin towns because that’s how you cover ground. The right response from the political class is not to milk it, or to mock it, but to be grateful and move on.
