GOP rep on AI: 'Let's get on top of it'

It was the line about AI falling into the wrong “hands” that stuck with us. Rep. Mike Flood isn’t wrong to be worried. This stuff is already powerful, already cheap, and already in the wild. You do not need a sci‑fi villain to cause real damage. You just need a scammer with a laptop, a deepfake voice clip, and a weekend.

Flood’s basic demand is simple: the people building the most capable models should sit in front of Congress and answer questions about safety and risk. Drag the grown-ups into the room. That’s not anti-innovation. That’s basic oversight, the kind we expect in banking, aviation, and drugs. When a product can automate fraud, supercharge hacking, or fabricate “evidence” that looks real, shrugging is not a plan.

The catch is what Washington usually does next. They haul in a few CEOs, get their camera clips, then write a bill that somehow kneecaps small startups while the biggest firms hire compliance lawyers and keep rolling. Don’t regulate the little guys out of existence. If we’re serious, focus on clear, narrow rules: identity fraud, election interference, bio-risk, and national security leaks. And build it so criminals and hostile states feel pain, not so American companies get buried in paperwork.

We also don’t need another round of bureaucratic empire-building that turns “AI safety” into a permanent excuse for agencies to expand. The goal should be to keep Americans safe and keep us ahead, not create a new permission slip culture. Flood is right to say we should get on top of it.
