This Week on The Hill: Congress returns to a packed agenda

You can tell how serious Congress is by what it leaves “unfinished.” This week it’s a neat little trio: crypto rules, the farm bill, and a budget resolution Republicans need if they want a third reconciliation package. That is not small stuff. But the headline question isn’t whether Democrats will play ball. It’s whether Republicans can stop stepping on their own toes long enough to move the ball down the field.

Crypto is the new shiny object on Capitol Hill, and it’s also a real problem Washington helped create by ignoring it until it got too big to pretend away. We don’t need a “framework” that reads like a tech brochure and does nothing. We need rules that keep scams and backroom laundering out, without smothering the legitimate parts of the industry that are already here. Write the rules, don’t worship the buzzword. And don’t hand the regulators a blank check to make policy by enforcement press release.

Then there’s the farm bill, which always gets treated like a rural afterthought until it suddenly becomes urgent. Farmers can’t run a business on congressional vibes. Input costs are brutal, weather is unpredictable, and overseas competitors aren’t taking a pause because the Senate calendar is messy. Stop treating the farm bill like a hostage note. If lawmakers want to talk about food security and stable prices, this is where it starts, not with another round of Sunday-show talking points.

But the budget resolution is the hinge. If Republicans want reconciliation to do more than nibble around the edges, they need a plan they can actually pass, and that means less posturing and more math. Voters didn’t send the GOP back to Congress to watch a circular firing squad over process. Get aligned, then go deliver results. The country is tired of “packed agendas” that pack up and leave.
