GOP senator calls for Donald Trump Jr., Hunter Biden subpoenas

Senator Chuck Grassley is right to wonder about the wedding. Pairing Don Jr. and Hunter Biden in the same subpoena demand is a smart political move, but it’s also a legitimate question for the Senate Judiciary Committee. If the committee's job is to examine the intersection of family, power, and money, then the Bahamas wedding of Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson—reportedly paid for by someone other than the groom—checks the same box that Hunter Biden’s overseas deals did. The left spent four years pretending Hunter’s board seats were nobody’s business. They can’t suddenly claim the same arrangement is a crime when the last name is Trump.

What makes this demand interesting is the funding question. Hunter Biden’s problems were always about access. Millions of dollars from foreign nationals while his father was vice president—the appearance alone was damning. Now we have the president’s son marrying into a new family, with a tab that apparently didn't come out of his own pocket. Is there a quid pro quo? Maybe. Is there an appearance of impropriety that warrants a look? Absolutely. The double standard on this is exhausting, and Grassley is calling it out with a simple, common-sense move: ask both families the same questions.

There will be howling from Democrats about "both-sidesism." Let them howl. The public has watched Hunter Biden’s laptop be ignored, his business partners plead guilty, and his father’s allies dismiss it all as a smear. Now they want to pretend that getting married offshore next to a decision-maker is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. The subpoena is the right instrument. It forces the same scrutiny on both. If Don Jr. has nothing to hide, he should welcome the chance to put this to bed. If Hunter Biden has nothing to hide, so should he. The real problem? Only one of those men has historically been treated like he's above the law.
