House GOP's Bold Move to Pass Trump-Backed Voter ID Despite Dems

You can almost hear the pearl-clutching already: House Republicans are looking at reconciliation to move the SAVE America Act, with voter ID and proof-of-citizenship rules, and Democrats are acting like the sky is falling. It’s not. It’s a response to a real problem, and it’s overdue. If you need an ID to board a plane, you can handle one to vote.

The filibuster fight is the part that will drive cable news for days, but the substance matters more than the procedure. The point here is simple: tighten the rules so only citizens vote in federal elections, and make states take verification seriously. Democrats keep telling people voter ID is some kind of sinister plot, while also insisting our elections are totally secure. Those two lines don’t fit together, and voters know it. This is about basic eligibility, not a morality play.

Reconciliation isn’t a magic wand. The Senate parliamentarian, the Byrd Rule, and the reality of razor-thin margins can all turn a “bold move” into a very public faceplant. But we get why Republicans are trying. Democrats have used every tool in the box to jam through priorities and then dare the other side to do something about it. Don’t demand unilateral disarmament and call it “norms.”

President Trump backing this puts a spotlight where it belongs: on confidence in elections, not the feelings of advocacy groups. If Democrats want to oppose voter ID and proof of citizenship, fine.
