Hunter Biden claims under oath that his family is broke amid fight over $17M legal bill

Hunter Biden sat for a deposition and told a law firm's lawyers he's basically broke. No car, no savings, no assets to speak of, this from a man whose paintings sold for six figures apiece to buyers who mostly wouldn't say who they were, and whose consulting arrangements paid him more than most Americans earn in a decade. Somewhere between Burisma and the art gallery, the money apparently just evaporated.

The $17 million bill is real and so is the lawsuit, and maybe he genuinely can't pay it. People do go broke, even people who seemed to have it all. But the timing and the audience matter here. This isn't a guy explaining himself to a reporter, it's sworn testimony, and if it turns out to be shaded or convenient, that's not a messaging problem, that's a legal one.

What makes this land differently than an ordinary rich-guy-claims-poverty story is the last name attached to it. For years the family answer to questions about the money was silence, then denial, then "that's a personal matter." Now, under oath, the story shifts again. Maybe it's all true.
