ICE asks North Carolina to hold illegal immigrant accused in toddler’s bathtub death

A 14-month-old drowned because nobody was watching the bathtub. That's the whole tragedy in one sentence, and it's the kind of thing that should never need an immigration angle to be horrifying. But here we are, because the man accused of leaving that baby alone is in the country illegally, and now ICE has to file a detainer just to make sure a local jail doesn't cut him loose before anyone can sort out what actually happened.

That detainer shouldn't be controversial. It's not a conviction, it's not a deportation order, it's a request to hold someone accused of a fatal act of negligence until the justice system does its job. Yet we've built a country where in plenty of jurisdictions that request gets ignored on principle, where "sanctuary" policies mean local officials would rather risk letting an accused man walk than cooperate with federal authorities. If that's what happens here, it will be one more case where the system's priorities look badly out of order next to a dead toddler.

None of this is an argument about immigrants generally, and it shouldn't be treated that way by anyone on either side of this. It's an argument about basic competence: know who is in the country, keep track of people accused of serious harm to children, and don't let bureaucratic turf wars over detainers become the reason accountability slips through the cracks. A baby is dead. The least we owe her is a system that doesn't shrug.
