ICE lodges detainer for illegal immigrant accused of trying to disarm Virginia police officer

An officer in Annandale gets jumped and someone tries to take his gun off his hip. That's not a shoplifting charge or a broken taillight. That's the kind of encounter that ends with a funeral if it goes a different way for a few seconds. And the man accused of doing it was in the country illegally, which means the only reason he was on that street in the first place is a system that couldn't be bothered to know who he was before he allegedly tried to disarm a cop.

ICE lodging a detainer is the bare minimum here, not some aggressive crackdown. It just means federal authorities want him held so he can't walk out the door and vanish into another county the moment local charges get sorted out. That used to be uncontroversial. In plenty of jurisdictions now it isn't, because detainers get treated as optional requests that sheriffs and jails can shrug off depending on the politics of the moment.
