I'm Gen Z: If the GOP wants my vote, stop the speeches and fix the housing crisis

A twenty-something writer telling the GOP to skip the applause lines and talk about rent is not exactly a scandal, it's just correct. Housing is the thing that decides whether a 24-year-old can move out, start a family, or stay stuck in a childhood bedroom scrolling TikTok about how the system is rigged against them. If the party shows up in Dallas next week with another round of culture-war one-liners and no actual plan on zoning, permitting, or supply, it will deserve the shrug it gets from that generation.

The cost of living complaint isn't abstract either. Grocery bills, insurance, car payments, all of it has piled up during a stretch when wages haven't kept pace, and young voters notice math faster than they notice messaging. They're not asking for a subsidy giveaway. They're asking why building a home in most American cities takes years and a stack of permits thick enough to stop a bulldozer. That's a policy failure with a policy fix, and it's one Republicans, of all people, should be comfortable making the case for: cut the red tape, let builders build, get local governments out of their own way.

The free speech piece matters too, and not because it's a talking point that plays well on a debate stage. Gen Z grew up online watching platforms and institutions decide what opinions were allowed to exist. A party that actually defends open debate, instead of just invoking it during election season, has a real opening with voters who are sick of being told what they're allowed to say.

None of this requires abandoning conservative instincts. It requires applying them to problems young people actually have, instead of problems a consultant thinks will fire up a rally. Fix the roof before you sing about the house. If the convention produces another parade of speeches and no serious housing agenda, don't be surprised when the youngest voters in the country tune it out again.
