Iranian blogger sentenced to death for ‘insulting supreme leader’

A 33-year-old blogger writes, “We saw how much they killed us,” and the state’s answer is a death sentence for “insulting the supreme leader.” That’s not a court ruling. It’s a warning shot. Tehran isn’t even pretending this is about law. It’s about making sure everyone else watches what happens when you say the quiet part out loud.

The detail that sticks is how ordinary the “crime” is. A post during January’s protests. A line about repression. Iran wants the whole world to understand that words count as violence only when they embarrass the regime. If you’re a citizen talking about being beaten, jailed, or shot, you’re the problem. If you’re the government doing the beating, jailing, or shooting, you get to call it stability.

Here’s the other thing: Western newsrooms will file this under “human rights concerns” and move on. We shouldn’t. This is the regime’s operating system, not a one-off excess by a local judge. Iran executes, tortures, and terrorizes at home, then funds chaos abroad, and too many people still talk about it like it’s a normal country that just needs better “engagement.”

America doesn’t have to invade anywhere to treat this seriously. But we do need to stop handing Tehran dignity it hasn’t earned. Name what it is, back the people taking the risk to speak, and keep pressure where it belongs. The message from Tehran is simple: obey, or die. It’s on us not to shrug at that.
