James Carville predicts 2028 Democratic primary will test true strength of party's socialist wing

James Carville has been telling Democrats the same thing for years now, and it's a little remarkable he still has to say it. His read on 2028 is basically a warning shot: let the socialist wing of the party actually win a primary, and see what happens to the coalition. That's not a Republican talking point. That's a guy who's won national campaigns for Democrats telling his own side the math doesn't work.

What's interesting is how much this echoes what's already visible in places like New York City, where a DSA-aligned candidate has real institutional support and real donor money behind him. Carville isn't hypothesizing about some hypothetical future faction. He's watching it happen in real time and doing the arithmetic on what it means for a national ticket that still needs union households in Pennsylvania and moderate suburbanites in Georgia.

The honest part of his prediction is the word "test." He's not predicting the socialist wing loses. He's predicting the party finds out, for real, whether it can win with that wing driving the bus. Democrats have spent a decade papering over that question with vague talk about a "big tent," and Carville's basically saying the tent has a hole in the middle of it that 2028 is going to expose whether anyone wants it exposed or not.

We'd just note that this is a fight Republicans should watch closely rather than gloat over. A Democratic Party forced to actually resolve what it believes, instead of drifting, is a more serious opponent. But that's their problem to solve, not ours.
