Jasmine Crockett Pours Cold Water On James Talarico’s Senate Hype

Nothing says "unified front" like the top two Democrats in a Senate primary spending their time telling reporters why the other one can't actually win. Crockett isn't attacking Talarico's record or his positions. She's attacking the polls themselves, the ones showing him ahead or close to it, basically telling voters not to trust their own eyes. That's not a campaign strategy. That's a candidate who senses the ground shifting under her and doesn't like where it's headed.

Texas Democrats have been promised a breakthrough Senate race for years now, and every cycle it evaporates. What's different this time is that instead of uniting behind whoever the polling says is strongest, they're eating each other alive over which internal number to believe. Crockett has built a national profile on cable hits and viral moments. Talarico, a state legislator with a lower national footprint, is apparently the one actually moving numbers in the state that matters. That's an uncomfortable gap for someone used to being the loudest voice in the room.

There's a lesson here that goes beyond one Texas primary. When a party's bench starts fighting over polling credibility instead of ideas, it's usually because the ideas aren't the selling point anymore. Personality and profile are. Crockett didn't dispute Talarico's platform in this interview. She disputed his viability, which is a much smaller and more self-interested argument to be making six months out from an election Democrats keep telling everyone they can win.

We'll believe Texas is in play when Democrats stop arguing about which one of them the pollsters like better and start explaining why either of them beats a Republican statewide, something no Democrat has managed since 1994.
