JONATHAN TURLEY: Democratic Socialists want to remake America in their image. That’s terrifying

Turley is doing more than picking a fight with a fringe group here. He's naming a platform that, in plain text, calls for scrapping the Senate, gutting the Supreme Court, and doing away with the presidency as we know it. That's not a policy disagreement over tax brackets or healthcare subsidies. That's a proposal to dismantle the actual architecture of American government, the checks that stop a temporary majority from becoming a permanent ruling class.

What's striking is how casually this gets treated in some corners as just another item on a progressive wish list, filed next to student debt relief and green jobs. It isn't. The Senate exists so California and Wyoming both get a say. The Supreme Court exists so a law can be tested against the Constitution rather than just the mood of whoever holds 218 House seats that year. Strip those out and you don't get a more responsive democracy, you get a system with no brakes, run by whoever wins the last election and intends to make sure there isn't a fair one after that.

The Jacobin comparison isn't cheap theater either. Revolutionary movements that promise to sweep away "obsolete" institutions almost never replace them with something more accountable. They replace them with concentrated power and a lot of promises about the people's will. American history is full of people who wanted more democracy and ended up building less of it once they had the levers.

None of this means DSA is about to abolish the Senate next Tuesday. But platforms tell you what people actually believe when nobody's forcing them to be careful. This one deserves to be read out loud, not waved off as internet noise.
