Left-Wing House Hopeful William Lawrence Featured Pedophile Sex

There’s an old rule in politics: you can’t choose your family, but you can damn sure choose who stands next to you at a campaign kickoff. Michigan Democrat William Lawrence chose Deshawn Bailey—a man who served 14 years for repeatedly raping his 12-year-old half-sister. That’s not a staffing mix-up. That’s a statement.

The Washington Free Beacon reported that Bailey shared the stage with Lawrence back in August, introduced as a local activist alongside other community voices. No one bothered to check the guest list, apparently. The campaign’s excuse is predictable: they didn't know, they're horrified, they're reviewing their vetting process. Fine. But the left spent the last decade telling us that the company you keep is the character you reveal. It’s the standard they set, and it’s the standard Lawrence should be held to now. When your idea of community leadership includes a convicted pedophile, voters are allowed to wonder about your judgment—and your moral compass.

What’s telling is the silence from national Democrats on this one. If the roles were reversed, a Republican candidate would be facing nonstop cable segments and demands to drop out by dinner. Instead, Lawrence is likely to keep his support, because in today’s Democratic Party, the only unforgivable sin is being on the wrong side of the partisan ledger. We’re not calling for his head over a policy disagreement. We’re talking about a man who featured a child rapist as a prop in his political debut. The 12th District deserves better. Michigan deserves better. So the question for Lawrence is simple: if you didn’t know about Bailey, what else aren’t you checking? And if you did know, that’s not an oversight—that’s a disqualifier.
