‘Maybe we should feel sorry’ for Canada: Joe Concha reacts to Lake America

Renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America" is the kind of thing that sounds like a joke until you realize the White House actually did it, and now half of cable news is treating it like a constitutional crisis. Debbie Dingell went on television looking genuinely rattled, and Joe Concha's response, comparing her cadence to Biden's infamous debate meltdown, landed because it's true. There's a real skill to sounding alarmed about nothing in particular, and Dingell has apparently mastered it.

Here's the thing nobody wants to say out loud: this is a gimmick, and gimmicks are supposed to get a reaction. Trump knows exactly what he's doing when he floats something like this. It's a distraction, a troll, a headline generator, take your pick. What it is not is a genuine threat to Canadian sovereignty or American governance. The lake is still going to be full of the same water tomorrow regardless of what's printed on a map. Treating it as some grave offense just tells everyone watching that you've lost the ability to distinguish a stunt from a crisis.

Concha's line about feeling sorry for Canada gets at something real too. Ottawa has spent the last year lurching between outrage and defensiveness over Trump's rhetoric, and at some point that stops looking like principled resistance and starts looking like a country that doesn't know how to take a punch. Overreacting to a renamed lake doesn't project strength. It projects the opposite.

None of this means Trump's antics deserve a pass just because the media reaction is silly. But there's a difference between covering a story and being played by it. Right now, too many of Trump's critics are doing the latter, and they keep handing him the exact reaction he was fishing for.
