It’s a sour candy bottle with a rolling ball on top, and that little gimmick is exactly the problem. Federal regulators say the ball can detach on the Ricky Joy Sour Crush rolling liquid candy bottles, turning a snack into a choking hazard. Over 2 million bottles is not a quirky “oops.” That’s a lot of these things sitting in pantries, backpacks, and checkout aisles. If a part can pop off, kids will find it first.

We’re not in the camp that thinks every recall is proof America is falling apart. Recalls happen. But this one reads like a basic design flaw that should have been caught before it ever got boxed up and shipped. Candy makers love novelty packaging because it sells, and parents assume the toy-like parts are there because someone tested them. “Rolling” shouldn’t mean “comes apart.” If the whole selling point is a ball applicator, that ball has to be practically welded on.

The next step shouldn’t be a victory lap for regulators or a shrug from the company. It should be fast, loud communication and a clean process for refunds or replacements. Stores need to pull it quickly, not after it’s been scanned at the register a thousand more times. And the company should say plainly where these were sold, how to spot the recalled bottles, and what they’re doing to fix the design. A recall only works if regular families actually hear about it..
