New Yorkers Will Need to Show ID at City-run Grocery Stores, but Not to Vote

So let's get this straight. To buy a subsidized bag of groceries at one of Mamdani's new city-run stores, you'll need to show ID. To decide who runs the country, you won't. Somebody explain the logic there, because we can't find it.

This isn't a gotcha, it's a window into how the whole voter ID debate actually works on the left. When Republicans push the SAVE Act, we're told requiring identification is some relic of Jim Crow, that it'll disenfranchise the poor, the elderly, minorities, whoever. But when the city needs to make sure the same person isn't walking out with three carts of free or discounted food, suddenly ID checks are just common sense. Funny how the "barrier to access" argument evaporates the moment it's inconvenient for the people running the program.

The honest answer is that ID requirements aren't hard to satisfy for the vast majority of Americans, which is exactly why cities use them constantly, for banking, for renting an apartment, for picking up a prescription, and now for grocery shopping in Mamdani's system. Nobody seriously thinks that discriminates against anyone. The objection to voter ID was never really about access. It's about control over the rules of an election that both sides know matters more than a grocery run.

If Democrats want to keep arguing voter ID is voter suppression, they might start by explaining why their own socialist grocery experiment doesn't trust the honor system either.
