Newsom blames Trump for DOJ probe, but reports say investigation predates his administration

Gavin Newsom has built a whole national persona around being the guy who fights back against Trump. So when word came out that the DOJ was looking into his orbit, the instinct was obvious: blame the man in the Oval Office. Only problem is the timeline doesn't cooperate. Reports indicate this investigation has roots going back to the Biden administration, which makes the "Trump is coming after me" framing a lot less convincing than Newsom would like.

That's the trouble with reaching for the persecution narrative before you've checked the facts. It plays great on cable news and even better on a future campaign trail, but it falls apart the moment reporters start pulling records. If federal investigators were already circling before Trump was even back in office, this isn't retaliation. It's just an investigation that Newsom happened to inherit along with the job.

We get why "Trump did this to me" is a tempting story for a guy positioning himself for 2028. It's just not the true one here. Voters can tell the difference between a politician under scrutiny and a politician crying wolf, and pretending otherwise only makes the eventual walk-back more embarrassing.
