Ohio Dem. Gov. Candidate Amy Acton Attacked at Fair

Getting attacked at a county fair is not a policy dispute. It's a crime, full stop, and whoever did this to Amy Acton should face the consequences the law provides. Politics in this country has gotten ugly enough on its own without people deciding that physical confrontation is now part of the campaign trail. There's no asterisk on that just because we disagree with her politics.

That said, we'd be lying if we pretended this happens in a vacuum. The temperature of American political life has been climbing for years, and both sides have contributed to it in different ways, whether through rhetoric that treats opponents as existential threats or a media culture that rewards outrage over substance. Acton, who Ohioans remember from her pandemic-era health orders, has plenty of critics on the right who think her policies did real damage. Fine. Argue that. Vote against her. Nobody gets to put hands on her at a fair because they're mad about lockdown mandates from four years ago.

What should worry people, regardless of party, is how normal this kind of incident has started to feel. A candidate can't work a county fair, shake hands, eat a corn dog, without wondering if someone in the crowd wants to escalate. That's a bad sign for a republic that still needs candidates to show up in public and meet actual voters instead of hiding behind glass and security details. We hope the charges stick and we hope this doesn't become another one of those stories both sides use for a week and then forget.
