Trump teases idea of changing New Mexico to ‘New America’

A guy posts a map with the word "Mexico" crossed out and "America" scrawled underneath, and now we're all supposed to have a position on renaming a state that's been called New Mexico since before Arizona was a twinkle in anybody's eye. That's the internet in 2024. A president's idle Truth Social doodle becomes a headline, and by Wednesday somebody in Santa Fe is being asked on local news how he feels about erasing his state's identity.

Here's the thing though: nobody actually thinks this is happening. New Mexico isn't the Gulf of Mexico. You can't quietly rebrand a body of water on a federal map and have most people shrug. Renaming an actual state with its own government, its own constitution, its own 400-year-old name predating the United States itself would require Congress, a constitutional amendment process nobody's touching, and a fight with a state that would treat it as exactly the insult it would be. Trump knows this. It's a bit, dressed up as a headline because it always works.

That said, we get why it lands wrong even as a joke. New Mexico's name has nothing to do with the country of Mexico in the way people assume, and the state has spent generations explaining that history to people who don't bother learning it. Turning it into a punchline about border politics, even a throwaway one, flattens something real. The Gulf renaming was symbolic theater aimed at Mexico the country. This is aimed, whether intentionally or not, at a state full of American citizens. There's a difference, and it's worth noticing even if nothing ever comes of the post itself.
