Palestinian journalist Rula Jebreal calls Hakeem Jeffries an ‘AIPAC monkey’ – claims she didn’t mean it in a ‘racist way’

There's no version of calling a black man a "monkey" that comes with a built-in racism exemption, no matter how badly you want to attach it to a policy complaint about AIPAC. Rula Jebreal knew exactly what word she was reaching for. The idea that she can slap "not racist" on it afterward like a warning label and walk away clean tells you everything about how casually that kind of language gets tossed around when the target is a Democrat who won't toe the line on Israel.

What's actually revealing here is the target, not just the slur. Hakeem Jeffries is the House Minority Leader, about as establishment as it gets, and he still gets treated as some kind of foreign agent because he supports a longtime American ally. That's the real accusation buried in "AIPAC monkey," that a black American official can't possibly have his own views on Israel, he must be owned by someone else. That's not a critique of policy. That's a conspiracy theory with a racial slur stapled to it.

And notice who's hosting the podcast where this happened. Wajahat Ali has built a career lecturing the country about racism and dog whistles, yet here's a guest on his own show reaching for a literal epithet aimed at a black lawmaker, and the conversation just rolls on. No pushback in the moment that's been reported, no "hang on, say that again." If this had come out of a conservative mouth about a Democrat, it would be a five-alarm cable news fire for a week straight.

We're not interested in the selective outrage game, but we do think words mean something and context doesn't erase that. Jebreal can disagree with Jeffries on Israel all day long, that's fair game in a democracy. Calling him a monkey isn't an argument. It's just ugly, and pretending otherwise afterward makes it worse, not better.
