Police charge six in Fairfax County in connection to blaze at fire department training facility

Six people for one fire, and half of them kids. That detail sticks. The blaze at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue training facility in Lorton was not some abandoned shed out by the highway. It was a place meant to train the people we call when our worst day shows up. A firehouse training site is not a playground.

Fairfax police say three adults and three minors are now charged. Good. The public deserves to know this wasn’t waved off as “kids being kids” or buried because it’s inconvenient. If investigators can tie people to arson or related offenses, then the county should press it and press it fast. Consequences have to be real, not a lecture and a ride home.

There’s another angle here, too. When you torch a facility like that, you’re not just damaging county property. You’re draining resources that should be going to readiness, response times, and training. Taxpayers will eat the cleanup bill, firefighters lose training time, and the community is less prepared for the next emergency. The people who pay get punished twice.

And if minors are involved, we’re going to hear the usual chorus about second chances. Fine. Second chances come after accountability, restitution, and some hard truth about what they risked. Parents should be pulled in. The adults should be treated like adults. Fairfax County should send a clear message: this wasn’t “mischief.” It was a dangerous act aimed at the very people who keep the rest of us safe.
