Poll: Democrat Bob Brooks holds narrow lead over GOP U.S. Rep.

A poll can be a snapshot, and this one shows Bob Brooks with a narrow edge over Ryan Mackenzie in Pennsylvania's 7th. Fine. But anyone who reads this as proof that the district has turned blue is looking at a single frame of a movie. The Lehigh Valley is exactly the kind of place where Republicans win when they show up and lose when they don't.

The 7th is not ruby red. It's a working-class swing district that rewards candidates who talk about energy, manufacturing, and the border in plain terms. Mackenzie has a record to run on. Brooks is running as a moderate Democrat, which in this district is a costume he has to keep zipped for the next six months. A narrow lead in one poll is not a mandate. It's a warning that the GOP campaign machinery needs to engage, not a signal to panic.

What should bother Republicans more than the number is the complacency that produces these numbers. If the party assumes the 7th is safe because a Republican holds it, then Bob Brooks has already won the message war. He is counting on suburban voters who like Biden's spending but don't want to admit it. Mackenzie needs to tie Brooks to the national Democrats' record on inflation and crime, and do it now, not in October.

The district is winnable, but not by default. Republicans have the better story to tell in Pennsylvania's working towns. The question is whether they'll bother telling it. The poll is a gift if it wakes people up. If it doesn't, it will be the first paragraph of an obituary.
