It takes a special kind of audacity for a Republican to hand the left the rope to hang the party with, but here we are. Senator John Curtis of Utah has decided that the most pressing issue facing the Senate Judiciary Committee is subpoenaing Donald Trump Jr. for his business dealings. As if the whistleblower-industrial complex hasn't spent the last eight years digging through every Trump family receipt, tax return, and bank statement already. The only thing a subpoena will produce is another year of cable news theater and a few dozen more ridiculous "sources familiar" stories.

Now, does anyone actually believe Hunter Biden's laptop is getting a fair shake? The fix is already in on that front. We watched the media call it Russian disinformation, the intelligence community sign off on that nonsense, and the DOJ sit on the investigation until after the election. If Curtis thinks adding a Republican subpoena to that pile changes the math, he's dreaming. The families are not equals in the eyes of the establishment, and pretending otherwise is how conservatives lose focus. We are not the party of performative even-handedness.

What Curtis really needs to answer is whether he wants to help the Democrats change the subject. Every day we spend litigating Don Jr.'s hunting trips or podcast deals is a day we aren't talking about the border, inflation, or the two-tiered justice system that protects the Biden family's shell companies. There is no moral victory in being the one GOP senator who "got" Hunter Biden. There's only the result: a weakened hand and a corrupted process. If he wants to clean up Washington, the tool isn't a summons to a committee chairman who will bury it in a drawer. It's winning the argument and holding the real power. Otherwise, he's just performing a ritual that makes everyone feel principled while nothing changes.
