SEE IT: Michigan Dem predicts far-left El-Sayed will win Senate race after backing his primary rival

Gary Peters spent months and real money trying to stop Abdul El-Sayed from winning the Democratic primary, and now that El-Sayed has won it, Peters is out there telling reporters he's going to beat Mike Rogers anyway. That's not loyalty, that's math. Peters knows his party has no choice but to fall in line, so he's doing it with a smile and pretending the primary fight never happened.

It's worth remembering why Peters backed Haley Stevens in the first place. She was the "electable" pick, the candidate Democrats thought could hold a swing seat without scaring off moderates. El-Sayed is a different animal entirely, a Bernie-aligned single-payer guy who ran to Stevens's left and won anyway. If Peters genuinely believed his own argument during the primary, his sudden confidence now should ring hollow to anyone paying attention.

What this really shows is a Michigan Democratic Party that has drifted further left than its own establishment wanted, and that establishment scrambling to catch up rather than admit it lost the argument. Mike Rogers gets to run against a nominee who is well to the left of the state's swing voters, in a state Trump carried, while the guy who warned everyone about that exact problem now cheerleads for him in public.

Voters in Michigan aren't dumb. They'll notice the same senator who said El-Sayed wasn't the right fit for the moment is now asking them to trust his judgment on who wins in November.
